Pod Vape Kits FAQs
What are pod vapes?
Pod vapes (or pod vape kits) are made up of two components: a ‘pod’, which holds e-liquid and houses a coil, and a battery, which powers the device. Pods can be open or closed, and can vary in size from slim e-cigarette styles to bulkier, more powerful mods.
Vape pod cartridges are disposable in your general waste, as they are single use.

Should I get an open or closed pod vape?
As we mentioned above, there are two main types of pod vape – open and closed.
A closed pod vape kit means that the pod cartridge is sealed and comes with a fixed coil and e-liquid. When the e-liquid is finished, you can simply remove the pod cartridge from the device and replace it with another. This is an easy and convenient method, as you don’t have to fill the pod cartridge yourself or buy e-liquid separately.
An open or refillable pod vape kit means the pod is refillable, and you can top up or swap out the e-liquid in the chamber. The refillable pod cartridges may come with a built-in coil, meaning you will need to buy a new pod when the coil wears out, such as the OXVA V3 pod cartridges, or they may have a replaceable coil that you can simply swap out when needed, such as the Caliburn G2 pod cartridges.
Using an open pod vape gives you the freedom to choose different flavours or brands of e-liquid, and can be cheaper too – while vape tanks are only legally allowed to hold 2ml of e-liquid, bottles can be sold with up to 10ml.
Which pod kit is right for me/who should use pod vapes?
Pod vapes are often favoured by those looking for an aid to quit smoking, as they are a good middle ground between cheaper vape pens, which may not adequately satisfy nicotine cravings (especially for a heavy smoker) and advanced vape kits, where the complexity of the set-up can be a barrier to successful quitting.
With pod vapes, there is a level of customisability to ensure that the system works for the smoker, but they are easy to use and require little more attention than the odd replacement of e-liquid or a pod cartridge.
Some smokers choose to simply switch permanently to vaping as an alternative, but if you are looking to remove nicotine from your life, pod vapes are a helpful tool as you can choose to lower the amount of nicotine down to 3mg or even use nicotine-free e-liquid.
How long do pod vapes last?
The actual pod vape device will last as long as the battery does, making them a good long-term solution as all you need to do is replace the necessary parts.
If you have a closed pod vape kit, you can simply replace the cartridge when the e-liquid runs out to continue using the device, as the cartridge contains the wick, coil and e-liquid.
If you have an open pod vape kit, you will need to replace the e-liquid as it runs out, and if you notice the flavour beginning to change (tasting significantly sweeter than normal, or tasting burnt) then you may need to buy a new coil. Some open pod vapes have the coil built into the pod cartridge, and in this case you will need to replace the whole pod cartridge when the coil wears out.
What e-liquids can you use with pod vapes?
With closed pod vape kits, you don’t have to worry about this – when you purchase the appropriate pod cartridge from the same brand as your vape kit, it will be suitable for use in your device.
However, for those who prefer open or refillable pod vape kits, we would recommend using either a 50:50 VG to PG ratio e-liquid, or one with a higher PG ratio – as VG is thicker, a high-VG liquid can put a strain on pod vape kits, so it is better suited to a more powerful device.
What are the benefits of pod vapes?
- Convenient and easy to use
Pod vapes are incredibly easy to use, making them perfect for the beginner vaper, ex-smokers or anyone just looking for a quick and easy vaping solution. They don’t involve building your kit from scratch or replacing every part of your device one by one – all you need to worry about is the pod cartridge or e-liquid and coil.
- Portable and stealthy
If your preference is for a stealthy vaping experience, pod vape kits are the ideal choice. High-PG vape liquid creates smaller and less dense clouds, and many pod vape devices are similar in size to vape pen kits.
- Ideal quit-smoking aid
Many ex-smokers find that vaping is a useful tool on their journey to quit smoking, and pod vape kits are popular among ex-smokers, thanks to the customisable nicotine levels, intuitive use and range of styles, whether you’re looking for a slim or boxy design.
- Can be used for MTL and DTL vaping
Pod vape kits can be used for both Mouth to Lung (MTL) and Direct to Lung (DTL) vaping, so whatever your preference, you can use these devices.
- Cheaper than advanced mods
While advanced vape kits do come with a much larger variety of customisation options, that’s not what everyone is looking for in their vape device. As well as being easier to use, pod vape kits are typically cheaper than advanced vape kits, so if you don’t need the extra power, pod vapes are a great option.
