What is a vape coil?

A vape coil, otherwise known as an e-cig coil, is the part of the vape that heats the e-liquid in the vape and turns it into vapour. You can identify it as the wire wrapped around your e-cig wicking material in its notorious spiralled shape.

Vape coils in the UK come in a broad selection of sizes and designs, and purchasing the most appropriate coil can significantly enhance the performance of a vaping mod. With this in mind, coils are vital to your vape, and you should not underestimate them.

Your vape coil will come with an ohm specification, measuring the coil’s electrical resistance. E-cig coils’ ohm range typically falls between 2.4 and 2.8 ohms, with 2.5 ohms being particularly popular.

Which vape coil resistance should I pick?

Beginner vapers typically favour higher ohm coils (above 1 ohm) as they provide a stronger throat hit and can be utilised at a lower temperature. The feeling of Mouth-to-Lung vaping with these coils is similar to that of smoking a standard cigarette.

Experienced vapers generally gravitate towards sub-ohm vaping, otherwise known as Direct-to-Lung vaping. In this type of vaping, your coil has less than 1 ohm, producing extra-strong flavour bursts. These products typically create more denser clouds of vapour and are paired with higher VG liquids, although they use more e-liquid and battery power.

Do I have to replace a vape coil?

You will need to replace your e-cig coil when you notice the e-liquid starts to lose its flavour and has a burnt vape flavour, as the coil cannot manage how hot the tank is running.

Simply buy some replacement coils, remove the old one, and place the new one in the e-cig. Just remember to purchase the correct vape coil for your vape model, as there is no one coil that fits all tank types.

How often you’ll have to replace your vape coil depends on what kind of vaper you are. Heavy vapers tend to change their e-cig coil every week, while moderate vapers may only have to replace their vape coil every fortnight. Light vapers should only need to change their coil every three to four weeks. Using mouth-to-lung products with a higher PG value can also extend the longevity of your e-cig coil.

What are the different types of vape coils?

Though e-cig coils are available in a broad collection of types and uses, there are a few different materials you should be aware of as they can impact the overall cloud production and flavour.

  • Stainless Steel Coil

Stainless steel coils are known for having high durability and longevity.

  • Mesh Coil

Mesh coils have a bigger surface area than standard wire coils, enabling a larger amount of e-liquid to be vaporised and resulting in stronger flavours. For example, produce consistent vapour as the heat is evenly distributed across the surface.

  • Ceramic Coil

Ceramic coils enable air to pass through them, making an impressively smooth draw. They are also known for their longevity. Our Vaporesso collection utilises ceramic materials.

  • Nickel Coil

Nickel coils can only be utilised in temperature control mods but are reliable when used at high temperatures.

  • Kanthal Coil

Kanthal coils comprise chromium, iron, and aluminium, creating a durable alloy for long-lasting results. Our GeekVape Kanthal A1 Vape Coil Building Wire can help you build your own high-quality coil.

  • Titanium Coil

Titanium coils can be easily handled and offer a high-quality taste experience when the temperature control mode is used.

  • Nichrome Coil

Nichrome coils are made of nickel and chromium, heating up much faster than kanthal while still delivering reliable cloud production. Our Youde Nichrome Coil Building Wire can help you benefit from these materials while building your own coil.
